Cabo de Palos is a small fishing village featuring a huge lighthouse overlooking the Mediterranean. approximately 10 minutes’ drive away and a favourite retreat of visitors to La Manga Club.
It is part of a small ridge of volcanic hills that form a small peninsula. Evidence of this range are the islands in the Mediterranean Sea: Isla Grosa and the Islas Hormigas, as well as five located in the Mar Menor. Originally, it was a place of fishermen, but today is primarily a tourist resort known for its gastronomy (especially for its "caldero del Mar Menor," local recipe based on rice and fish in the area) and the Lighthouse 80 metres above sea level and 50 over the field located in the eastern part of the place, on a small hill. It was illuminated for the first time on January 31, 1865. Cabo Palos assures tourists that flock to the area in a wide range of water sports, especially diving, in all seasons, thanks to the warm climate of southeast Murcia and its majestic seabed.
Sunday is a good day to visit Cabo de Palos. There is a large market in the morning (9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.) just a few minutes’ walk from the seafront and there are numerous harbour front restaurants where you can sit in the sun and watch the world go by. There are also two large ceramic shops nearby which are well worth a visit. To get to Cabo de Palos, leave La Manga Club, following the signs for La Manga. When you get to the first roundabout take the first exit (right) and go up on to the dual carriageway, drive for about 4 to 5 minutes, you will see a sign for Cabo de Palos, take this exit, go past supermarket ‘Upper El Paso’ and this road takes you into the village to reach the harbour turn right at the traffic lights.
